LACTATION COOKIES

[mother’s] M I L K + c o o k i e s || I’ve been curiously checking out ALL the lactation treats + supplements companies online lately... (there are so many of them now). However, the majority of these companies are American, + being Canadian means the orders are quite likely to take longer (because customs) + have astronomical shipping rates almost equal to the retail values of their products.

While there is an increasing variety of packaged products on the market that promise to increase your milk supply, the concept is far from new. A quick google search of the word 'galactagogue' will turn up lists of foods + herbs that are known to increase milk production in lactating mothers. The primary [galactagogue] ingredients in these milky treats are oats, brewers yeast + flax.

So I opted instead to bake my own! [CONFESSION: I read the recipe out loud, step-by-step to my partner who made them for me while I nursed my hungry Wolf Pup.]

Wolfie gets all the milk, + Ma get all the cookies... #sweetdeal

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ If you’ve been curious to try lactation cookies, I've included the recipe I used below.

I N G R E D I E N T S

1 c. unsalted butter softened or melted

1/2 c. sugar

1/2 c. brown sugar

2 tsp. vanilla extract

2 medium or large eggs

4 tbsp. brewers yeast*

4 tbsp. flax seed meal

1 1/2 c. all-purpose flour

1 tsp. baking soda

1 tsp. salt

2 1/2 c. rolled oats

1/2 c. chocolate chips

*debittered brewers yeast works best if you can find it. We used regular brewers yeast, + the cookies turned out great, so its not critical to the flavour. If you have a difficult time sourcing brewers yeast, it is available on Amazon.ca but can also be found in capsules at your local health food store in a pinch.

D I R E C T I O N S

1. Preheat oven to 350°F.

2. In a large bowl, beat together melted butter, eggs, both sugars + vanilla.

3. In a separate bowl mix together brewers yeast, flax, salt, baking soda + flour.

4. Combine wet + dry ingredients.

5. Stir in rolled oats + chocolate chips.

6. Form cookies into desired size. (We formed uniform cookies in the bottom of a 1-cup measuring cup).

7. Place cookies on a baking sheet + bake for 12-14 minutes or until golden.
