MICHELLE PICCIONE

Hello! I'm Michelle. I am a Christian, a wife, a mother and a Traditional Midwife. As a Traditional Midwife I am called to walk with mothers in Sovereign Birth (non-medical birth, outside the allopathic system). I proudly serve mothers and their families in Calgary, Okotoks, Airdrie, Crossfield, Carstairs, Sundre, Water Valley, Olds, Didsbury, Red Deer, Bearspaw, Chestermere + Cochrane.

My inspiration for Mushaboom was born from my own profoundly transformative journey into motherhood. I am "mama" to a teenager, who was born via unnecessary caesarean section [breech] in 2009. In 2019, together with the support of my husband, I welcomed my daughter, after a healing non-medical pregnancy and birth at our home. My pregnancy and birth with my daughter were fully autonomous and completely outside of the allopathic system. My own personal experiences, my Traditional Catholic faith, as well as acquired wisdom from the collective (my experience witnessing and walking with mothers), deeply influence my values surrounding pregnancy, birth, + life in general. I feel particularly called to work with women and families who consciously + unapologetically claim their births as the rites-of-passage that they are; women who desire to birth autonomously, free of the restrictive medical management that has become commonplace in the obstetrical model of care that is employed within conventional [regulated] midwifery.

I am passionate about serving birthing and nursing women (and their families) in my community. (Women who choose sovereign birth after caesarean in particular, have a special place in my heart.)

 

Traditional Midwifery differs greatly from mainstream [regulated and medical] Licensed Midwifery in its ideology, scope, practice and core values. I believe that the type of non-medical midwifery I practice is exactly what women like myself are hungry for. In each birth that I have witnessed, my role has been different--because the women, their circumstances, pregnancies, relationships and their journeys are always different.

Outside of my passion for physiologic birth and breastfeeding, my interests include: spending time with my family, homesteading, gardening, art (especially painting), studying homeopathy + herbalism, holistic health + nutrition... These interests as well as my Catholic faith, compliment and inform my work as a Traditional Midwife.
